We are proud to be the first business district in the UK to launch the Deposit Return Scheme to give our shoppers the opportunity to recycle their single use plastic and metal. From our research, we know that visitors to the Estate want to do more for the environment.

UK consumers go through an estimated 14 billion plastic bottles annually, of which 4 billion go unrecycled. We believe in making recycling easier to understand and more accessible.

Deposit Return Scheme

The deposit return scheme (DRS) allows visitors to recycle their single use plastic bottles and cans. The automated machine uses innovative 360-degree scanning recognition system to identify, segregate, collect and process waste drink containers, creating a resource from recyclable material that would otherwise be incinerated or sent to landfill. This is the first publicly accessible recycling machine in the UK.

Our focus on plastic bottles is in direct response to our retailer survey which identified plastic issues as being most important for retailers and customers.

Refill Stations

Refillable water bottles are becoming the norm for our visitors at Canary Wharf. In September 2018 we installed seven refill stations across the Estate and have a number of retailers giving our customers access to water on the go across our malls.

On the occasion where our visitors forget their reusable bottle, we ensure that any single use bottle purchased on the Estate is captured and fed into the plastic recycling market through our Deposit Return Scheme.
